Headstamp Markings on Ammunition

A cartridge headstamp is a mark, or series of marks impressed, or sometimes embossed, on the head of the cartridge case during its manufacture. The mark can consist of numbers, letters, trademarks, figures or any combination of these. Systems of headstamp markings are used worldwide. They can be in any language, numbering system or can relate to any calendar.

Mechanical Sequence of Events During the Firing Cycle

The soldier must understand the rifle components and the mechanical sequence of events during the firing cycle. The eight cycles of functioning (feeding, chambering, locking, firing, unlocking, extracting, ejecting, and cocking) begin after the loaded magazine has been inserted in the weapon.

Priming Compositions

Priming compositions for firearms ammunition are mixtures which, when subjected to percussion, provide a sudden burst of flame that serves to ignite the propellant within the cartridge case. A priming composition must deliver a relatively large volume of hot gases and hot solid particles without the development of a detonating wave. The ideal priming composition would consist of a cheap, readily available, relatively safe to handle, simple chemical compound of uniform granulation which when...

Firing Positions

All firing positions are taught during basic rifle marksmanship training. During initial fundamental training, the basic firing positions are used. The other positions are added later in training to support tactical conditions. Basic Firing Positions. Two firing positions are used during initial fundamental training the individual supported fighting position and prone unsupported position. Both offer a stable platform for firing the rifle. They are also the positions used during basic record...

Ortgies pocket pistols

The Ortgies pistols are unique in design, although inevitably they have some features in common with other automatic pistols. The pistol was designed by Heinrich Ortgies, said to have been a German by birth but who was a resident of Liege, Belgium, until about the close of World War I. The first prototypes are thought to have been made in Belgium in 1915 - 1916.

Review of the Kimber Team Match II .45 ACP

It was my good fortune to receive a Kimber Team Match II in .45 caliber last month as an early birthday present (everyone, please send more guns ), and so I have the privilege of sharing my experiences about this fine firearm. This Kimber is my first 1911 pistol, so I am learning as I go along. I took it apart, cleaned and oiled it (it didn't need much cleaning), put it back together again, and took some photos during the process. The Team Match II .

Percentage of gun crimes committed by nra members

Someone came by searching for percentage of gun crimes committed by nra members On the one hand, membership in the National Rifle Association merely means you support the goals of the organization, not that you are a criminal. Even though some anti-gun activists would make membership a capitol offense if they could. Since NRA membership is not illegal, no one keeps an actual record of criminal offenses credited to NRA members.

J. W. Fecker Optics

Born in 1891, J.W. Fecker grew up in Cleveland and earned a degree in physics from Cleveland's Case School in Applied Science in 1912. Astronomy and optical engineering were accorded special attention at this school, because its founder ( together with his friends Warner and Swasey) happened to be a serious amateur astronomer. Not surprising that the direction of J.W. Fecker's career went in that direction.

Model 70 Pre 64 Varmint / Target Sights, Optics and Accesories

For generations, the Winchester Model 70 has been known as the rifleman's rifle. The rifle emerged in the ancient year of 1936 and set the standard for every bolt-gun to follow. It hasn't always been well respected though. It's reputation took a beating after a design change in 1964. In this article, I will be writing about the pre '64 Model 70 only. The Model 70 is an improvement on the earlier Winchester Model 54. The 54 was a very fine rifle for its time, but was eclipsed by the Model 70.

Proof Marks

Proof marks are stamps applied to various parts of a weapon during and after manufacture to show that the weapon is safe for use with the ammunition for which it was designed. In England, the London and Birmingham proof houses were established in 1637 and 1813, respectively by Royal Charter to protect the public from the sale of unsafe weapons.

Shotgun Slugs Ballistics

A shotgun slug is a single projectile primarily designed to be fired from a smooth-bored shotgun. Shotgun slug ammunition is available in most of the common shotgun calibres. The simplest form of slug is a round ball sometimes referred to in the United States as a pumpkin ball or pumpkin shot. Since it is a symmetrical projectile, it will not significantly deviate from its intended path if it begins to spin due to air pressure.

Suggested Loads For The TC Triumph Muzzleloader

The following charts show recommended charges using Black Powder or a Pyrodex equivalent as the propellant for Thompson Center Triumph muzzleloading rifles. Charges are listed by caliber, powder charge and type of projectile. Note that in each instance a series of charges are listed. More than one charge is shown in each category to clearly illustrate the appropriate powder charge range for that particular caliber, gun model and projectile.

.310 Martini- Henry Cadet Rifles

The Martini rifle has an interesting history. Martini is the abbreviated name for the Martini-Henry, a single shot, lever action rifle using an action Friedrich von Martini developed from the Peabody rifle. The barrel for the original Martini rifle was designed by Alexander Henry, had a 1 22 inch twist with seven grooves, hence the Martini-Henry name. Four models of the Martini Henry rifle were produced. The Mark I, the MArk II, Mark III and Mark IV.

Phoenix Arms HP22A .22 LR Pistol Review

I've always been interested in small guns, and over the years have thought about getting one of these little 22s from Phoenix Arms. I've seen them in pawn shops, and in local gun stores in the Chattanooga area. (This is a link to the Phoenix Arms homepage.) I was visiting Valu Pawn on Highway 153 last week, and saw a Deluxe Range Kit there. The Deluxe HP22A kit includes the extra long barrel, as well as the shorter barrel.

CVA Optima Recommended Loading Data Table

The proper charge for any muzzleloading firearm is an efficient load which provides consistent ignition and velocity while keeping breech pressures below the maximum safe levels. NOTE Rarely do two rifles settle on the same exact load. The shooter should load using the minimum and maximum charge limitations shown in the table below.

Penetrative powers of various types of ammunition

The penetration of various materials can be of great assistance in the investigation of shooting incidents. It is also of considerable general interest if for no other reason than to show how often the movie makers and novel writers make appalling blunders. In the past, one of the standard tests performed to assess bullet and cartridge performance was the penetration of pine boards of various thicknesses. This, as with any other type of penetration test, is plagued with inaccuracies.

The Smith & Wesson Model 645 in .45 ACP. It wasn't Big Blue's first foray into the .45 ACP cartridge, they did that with the DA .45 Hand Ejector M1917 backing during the Great War. The trigger has been optimally adjusted at the factory, and this setting should not be altered without good reason. If adjustment is however necessary, it is best to proceed according to the following instructions. Turning the screw a clockwise reduces the pawl intersection in interaction with the screw c for first-stage travel, the play between the trigger bar and the trigger pawl can be adjusted. Turning the screw b clockwise increases the trigger power, turning it counterclockwise reduces it...

Automatic cannon the mm guns

Type Machine Gun

The evolution of automatic cannon that is, of calibres between 20mm and 40mm between the wars can generally be characterised as a long period of casual development until the late 1930s, followed by a frantic rush to re-equip for the impending conflict. As with HMGs, automatic cannon did not find much favour in the anti-armour role, being reserved almost entirely for aircraft or anti-aircraft purposes. There were some exceptions, however. 38, closely related to the FlaK 30 and 38 AA guns Some of...

Adolph Toepperwein All Time Rifle Champ An Excerpt

By Charles Askins, Jr.American Rifleman, June 1950 A short time later-in 1894 to be exact-a long hungry six-foot Texan came drifting up out of Mexico. He had been down there with a circus for almost a year putting on rifle and pistol shooting exhibitions. Without fanfare or publicity the six-footer broke 955 out of 1,000 clay discs, 2 1 4 inches in diameter. This was in no way a record unless the mere fact that the shooting at clay discs constituted the establishment of a record.

FGC-9 Fulfills the Promise of 3D Printed Guns

The guerrilla 3D-gun file development group Deterrence Dispensed released to the public yesterday the much-anticipated FGC-9 project. The FGC-9 is described in the official release documentation as the most effective and easiest to build homemade semi-automatic firearm design for people with limited access to gunsmithing knowledge and tools. The FGC-9 release is important because it represents a fulfillment of the promise of 3D printed guns they can't be stopped.

The Colt 7.62x39 Carbine R6830

In 1993 Col introduced a new caliber into its AR15 line up. The gun was marketed as a hunters carbine chambered in 7.62 39 a round more or less identical to the .30-30 WCF. The R6830 was a 16 inch barreled carbine . The barrel is not really what we think of as lightweight these days and is closer to what many would call heavy. Probably good because the x39 round has noticeable recoil compared to the 556. The barrel does not have a chromed ore on these.

Muzzle Brakes

Browning Bar With Muzzle Break

I did not fully appreciate the effectiveness of a muzzle brake until repeatedly firing .50-caliber rifles. The first time I fired a .50, I was tensed up for a real jaw-shaking, something worse than a .458 Winchester Magnum elephant gun. Instead of roaring like a lion, however, that .50 purred like a kitten. The recoil was not even as strong as a .300 Winchester Magnum. Part of the effect was attributable to the gun's weight more than 30 pounds though equally it resulted from an effective muzzle...

Matches Gun Propellant

The .32 auto pistol round was very popular in its day and there are an enormous number of pistols out there chambered in this calibre. Making improvised cartridges in this calibre could not be easier as we only require a single 14mm length of 11 32 tube and a modified blank case. There is also no need to re-size any bullets because 'off the shelf' bullets will fit the 11 32 tube without any re-sizing After de- burring the tube, retainer is simply applied to the outer surface of the blank, and...

Spain's Exceptional Conceal Carry Gun: the Star PD 45 Pistol

In 1975, a company in my ancestral home of Espa a (Spain) released to the shooting community what was then one of the most desired handguns in the world. A compact, lightweight aluminium framed, .45 ACP pistol styled after the 1911. That company was Star Bonifacio Echeverria, S.A. and the pistol was the Star PD 45. Star Bonifacio Echeverria started making guns in 1905 and sadly went out of business in 1997 with the end of the Cold War and the downturn in the European arms market.

There are three accessories I consider non negotiable on a fighting AR. They are a useable tactical sling, a quality optic and a bright light. When it comes to mounting a light and a side sling on an AR the most obvious answer is to use a railed handguard, however it is not necessary the right answer for everyone.

Shot Placement

Sniper Shot Placement

Because society quite rightly imposes a taboo on the taking of human life, our paper targets usually are abstract and lacking in enough detail to understand where or why we're placing a shot. I've never seen a silhouette target that identifies the location of the brain, spine, heart, kidneys, liver, and major arteries though, in fact, these are our true targets, not a simple silhouette or vague center mass. The concept of shot placement has become well developed for pistol engagements, so we're...

The Forensic Aspects of Ballistics

Bullet Rifling

Rifles and handguns have rifled barrels, that is, spiral grooves have been cut the length of the interior or bore of the barrel Figure 2.1 . Rifling consists of these grooves and the metal left between the grooves the lands see Figure 1.13 . The purpose of rifling is to impart a rotational spin to the bullet along its longitudinal axis. This gyroscopic effect stabilizes the bullet's flight through the air, preventing it from tumbling end over end. This spin does not, however, stabilize the...

I was digging though my stuff and I had forgotten that my Advantage Arms Glock 19 .22LR conversion kit came with such a nice case that has custom cut foam. You don't really want to be stuffing a dirty kit into the foam, as that would dirty up the foam.

Ricochet Analysis Introduction

Projectile Ricochet

When a bullet strikes any surface, there is a critical angle at which the bullet will bounce off or ricochet from the surface rather than penetrate. After ricocheting from the surface, the missile will lose a considerable amount of its velocity anything up to 35 in test firings and, invariably, lose its stability. This is contrary to the popular belief that a ricocheting bullet will carry further than one fired at the elevation for maximum range. The actual degree at which a bullet will...

Hasty Sling

Hasty Sling Position

In a hasty sling configuration, the sling is attached to the upper and lower sling swivels of the rifle. When the left arm is placed in the hasty sling, tension created by the sling travels from side to side. The tension created by the sling affects how the position is established. There are fundamental differences between the application of the seven factors when using the hasty sling. The most obvious of these is placement of the left hand and the left elbow. To maximize the support provided...

Recovery methods for fired bullets

If a weapon has been recovered, it will be necessary to compare fired ammunition from this weapon with fired ammunition recovered from the scene. Obtaining a series of test cartridge cases from a self-loading pistol presents little difficulty as they merely have to be picked up. Obtaining fired bullets in a near pristine condition is, however, a little more difficult. In the past, cotton waste or wadding has been used, but this material can be quite abrasive to soft-lead bullets especially...

Understanding the USMC new ACOG reticle

The Marines started using a new ACOG reticle in the Squad Day Optic (SDO) on the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW). That optic got moved to the M27 IAR when the USMC switched over, and now the Corps is having the 4X Rifle Combat Optics (RCO) scopes get this reticle. Simple, right Pretty much self explanatory. I feel like I would be insulting your intelligence to explain how to use it. But, just in case you weren't clear how to use it, I'll explain.

Reloading For Old Guns Calibers

History is always popular with a large segment of people, and for those who are both firearms and history oriented it is only natural to try to understand the capabilities and limitations of the guns related to any given era. In fact, my own opinion is that in the modern firearms scene one of the areas of greatest growth is in actually using the older cartridge guns and replicas thereof in their many obsolete chamberings. One of the causes of this was the introduction and fantastic growth of...

Allen And Thurber .36 Exploded View

1855 Revolving Rifle Exploded View

The pepperbox pistol holds a unique position in American firearms history. It bridged the gap between the single-shot pistol and the revolver with stationary barrel. Pepperbox guns were handy, fairly reliable, and supplied a series of quick shots. They proved popular and were carried West in great numbers during the gold rush era. While there were flintlock pepperboxes, they were clumsy and expensive. The common pepperbox, as we know it today, came about after development of the percussion cap....

Disassembly And Cleaning Of Rifles And Plains Pistol

You must clean your rifle or pistol after each shooting session to prevent rust and corrosion from damaging the metal parts. The Lyman Great Plains Rifle, Trade Rifle, Deerstalker or Plains Pistol may be easily disassembled for cleaning by removing the ramrod, driving out the barrel wedge in the forearm, drawing the hammer to full cock and lifting the barrel muzzle first out of stock. The hooked breech will slip right out of the tang unit with no further disassembly needed. Of course, these...

Headspace And Timing

Headspace is the distance between the face of the bolt and the base of the cartridge case, fully seated in the chamber. Timing is the adjustment of the gun so that firing takes place when the recoiling parts are in the correct position for firing. Because the cartridge is held by the T-slot of the bolt, headspace with the MG is measured as the distance between the rear of the barrel and the face of the bolt. This occurs when the recoiling parts are forward and there is positive contact between...

Care and Cleaning

The correct procedure for cleaning your A-Bolt is as follows BE CERTAIN THE RIFLE IS UNLOADED AND THE BOLT HAS BEEN REMOVED. USE A CLEANING ROD WITH A TIP AND PATCH LARGE ENOUGH FOR A SNUG FIT IN THE BORE. Insert the rod and patch into the barrel at the breech end and run it back and forth several times. Do not insert the rod at the muzzle end as the rod or handle could strike the crown of the muzzle. Damage to this area can affect the accuracy of the rifle. INSPECT THE CHAMBER AND BORE FOR...

Using the proper size bit to match the caliber of the pistol or rifle you will use with this silencer, drill a straight...

Vintage Toy Guns Of Our Youth

Some old ads from where we were younger and freer for some of the awesome toy guns. I have no idea how many plastic green toy M16A1s and plastic cap grenades I went through as a kid. Then I moved on to pellet and BB guns. My first real gun was a WW1 1911 Colt at age 9. But obviously the toys got more time on the range killing commies for Ronald Regan in the early to mid 1980s. I always asked for the toy guns that looked the most real.

Brief History Of Fbi Semiauto Pistols

After the Miami Dade Shootout of April 11, 1986, the FBI was not completely satisfied with the commercially available pistols in 9x19mm and .45. Until a suitable semi-auto service pistol could be selected for general issue, individual agents were would still be issued S&W Model 13 revolvers. In August 1987, the FBI formed its Weapons Evaluation and Selection Advisory Group, composed of 13 firearms instructors and a gunsmith from the FBI Academy and eight Field Division.

Adjusting Eye Relief

Since most military and police sniper rifles are handed down from previous users, there's a hesitancy for the inheriting marksman to change anything that has worked in the past. This attitude is not entirely wrong if it ain't broke, don't fix it but when it comes to eye relief, it's a big mistake. Whether you're mounting or remounting a scope or you've just been issued a sniper weapon, you must adjust the eye relief. Excuse my harping, but I must emphasize correct eye relief is critical to...

Brief History of Firearms Early hand cannons

1517 Wheel Lock

The earliest type of handgun was simply a small cannon of wrought iron or bronze, fitted to a frame or stock with metal bands or leather thongs. These weapons were loaded from the muzzle end of the barrel with powder, wad and ball. A small hole at the breech end of the barrel, the touch hole, was provided with a pan into which a priming charge of powder was placed. On igniting this priming charge, either with a hot iron or lighted match, fire flashed through the touch hole and into the main...

Alphonse bertillon and the transition to dactylography

Perhaps one of the most influential people when speaking of criminal identification, is Alphonse Bertillon. He was born in 1853 to a family with strong scientific traditions. His grandfather was a well-known naturalist and mathematician, and he was the son of a distinguished French physician and statistician. Ironically, Bertillon was a very poor student. He was expelled from several schools and dismissed from an apprenticeship. In 1879 he was able to land a menial job filing information cards...

Historical Background

Firearm sound moderators and suppressors, commonly known as silencers to most people, have a certain mystique about them that can't be described, only felt. To the person who has a rabid hatred of guns, the silencer's mystique is similar to that of a coiled viper fascinating in a deadly, evil sort of way. To the average shooter who knows what they arc but has never used one, they conjure up visions of a toggy night on the waterfront in Istanbul, with a Soviet spy meeting his end as a CIA...

What is the maximum altitude that a bullet will attain

308 Bullet Flight Characteristic

As with many other subjects that one comes across in forensic firearms examinations, this has little real relevance in everyday case examinations. There was an occasion, however, when a commercial airliner which had been flying in the air space above Northern Ireland was found, on landing, to have a 7.62 mm calibre hole in one side of the tailfin. Unfortunately, the airline concerned was unwilling to have the tailfin dismantled and taken apart due to the costs involved, and it was not possible...
