And if there are self lacing shoes, self lacing boots for gadget happy hunters will soon follow. And we all know about the battery gremlin, that evil critter that discharges every battery for which there is no spare in miles.

I can see it now. The hunting party is up hours before dawn, ready to hike to the overlook where a possible record breaking Dall sheep was spotted. Suddenly, curses come from the ordinarily mild mannered hunter’s tent. The batteries in his boots are dead, and there are no replacements in camp!

Or even worse: It is the end of a long and tiring day. It’s time to pull the boots off and soak the tenderfoot hunters feet. But the batteries in his boots are dead and there are no spares in camp. So for ten long, hard days, the hunter will just have to keep his boots on.

Personally, I think I will stick to conventional boots. The sort I lace myself.

OFF TOPIC – BUT OBAMA SAYS IT IS “A HUMAN RIGHT” TO UNIONIZE THE UNWILLING

As one indication of just how far the Obama Regime is willing to go, Bluegrass Pundit has mined the first Universal Periodic Review (UPR) report of U.S. Human Rights issues, and found the regime considers unionization a human right.

Essentially, if a union gets half a business’ employees to sign a “card” that business is steamrollered, and unionized. No election, no muss, no fuss, no bother.

Here’s a brief explanation of what employers would face if Card Check becomes the law:

Very few small businesses, and a majority of non-unionized larger businesses, would be forced to do exactly what we would be forced to do. And that is?

The only thing we could do. Close the doors, sell what is salable, and go find something else to do. Because we cannot pay the exorbitant union contributions and still compete with China,Inc..

If you run a business, or if you depend on a non-unionized business for your business, or if you work for a living, this really should concern you.

GEORGE SOROS ATTACKS TEA PARTY

George Soros, the money behind many anti-gun groups including HCI, is reportedly bringing his money and muscle to bear in a new effort against the TEA Parties.

According to Infowars, Soros effort is called “teapartytracker.org” and has already brought up the long discredited accusations that TEA Party demonstrators spit on CongressCritters during the latter phases of the ObamaCare debate.

This seems to be just more of the same from Soros, who evidently learned the political lessons of his misspent youth very well. The danger is not that he will dig dig up dirt on one of the thousands of independent TEA Party groups, but that his money will manufacture dirt on all of them. After all, Soros said he would spend a billion dollars to get George Bush out of office. He very nearly did – and look at the mess it has made. Even if Soros himself is admittedly “enjoying a very prosperous” depression.

WHY THE EMPHASIS ON “GET A GUN?”

Because a gun is the premier defensive weapon. Unlike swords, bows, and other weapons that take both skill and practice to use effectively, most people can quickly learn to use a gun at “last resort” distances. And use that gun to defend themselves very effectively.

How effectively? Last year, a 130 pound Mobile, Alabama, housewife used a gun to fend off a 265 pound career criminal with an “evenings fun” on his mind. The man took one look at the business end of a 12 gauge and surrendered to her. She would have had no chance at all had she not had a gun behind her bedroom door.

I have polls showing that one homeowner in 50 uses a gun to defend themselves and their families from criminal predators every year. There are about 100 million homes in the United States, so two million Americans use a gun in self defense each year.

How many criminals use a gun to further their criminal career? Between 100,000 and 150,000 criminals (not crimes) each year. How many criminals leave the scene as soon as they discover their intended victim is armed? Almost all of them.

Of course, some criminals do shoot when they discover their intended prey is armed. For a variety of reasons, including the fact there are few shooting ranges in the big house, the citizen wins the shootout six to ten times more often than the criminal.

When the intended victim is a woman, and the criminal has sexual assault and perhaps murder on his mind, a gun almost always tilts the odds in the victim’s favor. By some polls, women with guns prevent a half million sexual assaults a year.

On balance, the benefits of widespread private gun ownership outweigh the dangers many times over. And that’s a fact.

CHICAGO

“That toddling town.” Where 1,000 gangs essentially own the mean streets.

Chicago. Where 80,000 gang members threaten to tree the understaffed and increasingly desperate police.

Chicago. Where 2,800,000 people, living in nearly one million “dwelling units,” property and very lives are threatened every day of the year by just one football stadium’s worth of gang bangers.

Chicago. Where extrapolating the homicide rate for the first eight months demonstrates the body count will approach 600 this year. In fact, if Chicago has a warm autumn, that count may go to 700.

What’s the solution? Easy. Repeal Chicago’s irrational gun laws. Allow, and encourage, any law abiding citizen who wants to protect his life and property to have the means to do so.

80,000 gang bangers cannot stand against a quarter million or so armed Chicagoans. Not when many of those Chicagoans are veterans of places like Anzio, and Omaha Beach: of Pusan and Pork Chop Hill, of Viet Nam, two Gulf Wars, Iraq, and Afghanistan. And the gang bangers are largely never beens and never will be’s.

And the gangs know it. If the kids do not, the leaders do. And gangs tend to melt away like ice cream on a hot sidewalk when they are faced with armed and determined opposition.

There’s no “cred” in getting offed by the old woman you are trying to rob – or by the old guy coming out of the pharmacy with his drugs. No cred, just a little “turf.” About six feet by three feet’s worth of turf. Where your mama can come every so often and cry over you.

So let the law abiding people of Chicago do what the City cannot. Clean the place up. The people live there. They were proud of the City. They could be proud again. If they were allowed to do the job for the city. If!

CHINA, THE GUN CONTROL CAPITAL?

Indeed it is. China has a billion people – and only 40 million guns in civilian hands. Most of those are WWI and WWII military relics, with a strong admixture of home mades. Very few of the home made guns would inspire any of us with confidence, and some are are rubber band powered.

Still, a single shot handgun with a relatively large and heavy hammer can achieve enough force to fire a primer. And that’s all it takes – provided the barrel can take the pressure. And when you don’t have any form of defensive weapon at all – ingenuity can be a real life saver.

Especially in cities with rigid gun controls and the commensurate crime rates.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING ON 9/12?

What are you doing next Sunday? Can you spend a few hours Partying? With the Party that believes in the Second Amendment?

Sure, a great many Republicans believe in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. And even some Democrats believe. But all of the TEA Party activists I have talked to believe in the Constitution. And the Free Enterprise system. And the least possible government. And that should be our kind of people. The kind of people we can vote for – with confidence that they will not sink the knife between our shoulder blades.

THE BEAR FACT

The bear fact is that many areas of the United States have far more bears than the habitat can support. So interactions between bears and humans are becoming increasingly common.

The solution is to increase predatory pressure on the bear population. But every time you do that, those who would prefer to see wildlife starve rather than be hunted start yelling. Most of the time, that is enough to stop hunting – and the bears continue to multiply. And the situation becomes more dangerous for humans and more precarious for the bears.

I HATE TO SAY IT, BUT SEVERAL PLANNED POSTS WILL HAVE TO BE REDONE

The pictures and text for some some holster and concealed carry discussion, photographs of disassembly and reassembly of the Remington 51, some discussion of .41 Magnum revolvers, and a few more things were on the hard drive that quit.

For those who are waiting with bated breath for the crime numbers, breathe easy. My number crunching collaborators get otherwise occupied at the beginning of the fall semester. For those who are waiting on other things – I am going through boxes and boxes and boxes as I have time. I am getting there – but I have not found the right box yet.

CAR THIEF “RUNS IN TERROR”

The Telegraph reports a “car thief ran in terror” when the cars owner hopped in the passengers seat and asked “All right, mate – where are we going, then?”

As it happens – the cars rightful owner was naked. Bare as an egg, naked.

Briefly quoting the Telegraph news item: “Mr Stuart said he even started the car and went on the hunt for the thief – whilst still naked – but eventually turned round and went home in fear that he would get arrested for indecent exposure.”

“He added: “I didn’t want to have my own collar felt because, at the end of the day, I was naked and it would have been hard to explain to police.”

But if he was naked, he would not have had a collar to be felt, now, would he?
