Regular readers will recall that I have often criticized the French police for releasing crime stats that, to be kind, not only leave a great deal to be desired, but appear to be openly fraudulent. It is extremely difficult to make sense of a country that claims it has a million registered guns but five million registered gun hunters. And where Bordeaux has reported more murders than all of France, Bordeaux included. Which makes a part greater than the whole.
In a similar vein, a French court has convicted an investigative reporter, not for lying, but for defamation for telling the truth. Wikipedia has the background, here.
The reporter, Philippe Karsenty, tells his story, here.
And this is what happens in venues where there is no defined Constitutional right to free speech.
