Journal News Hacked; Subscriber List Copied

Professor William Jacobson’s Legal Insurrection reports the Journal News, which recently published the names of every handgun permit holder in two New York Counties, has been hacked and its subscriber list taken.

While theft and publication of the Journal News “10,000 subscriber” base is theft, it is no more serious than pilfering. Criminals are not attracted to the homes of those foolish enough to blow their money on a Journal News subscription. Or on a subscription to any other Gannett outlet.

But criminals are attracted to both homes where they will find guns, and to homes they may burgle or invade without the threat of gunfire. What the rogue Gannett chain did was to endanger well over 400,000 families in the two counties they posted gun permit data on.

Professor Jacobson includes the interesting information that the Journal News has hired armed guards. I would not be surprised to see armed guards at every Gannett outlet. And deservedly so. Given Gannett’s history, tar and feathers would be entirely appropriate.
