Percentage Of Weapons Used In Violent Crime

The National Crime Victimization Survey for 2010 is out, and the main items of interest are that the downward trend in violent crime continued – and this chart of the weapons used in crimes (click on the chart for a clearer view):

Note that, excluding homicides where 66.5 percent involved a firearms; only 9 of every 100 violent crimes involved the use of a firearm. By contrast, 69 percent of violent crimes involved nothing more than “personal weapons,” feet, hands, and brute strength.

The fact is that firearms are used to expedite the commission of a relatively small, and declining, percentage of crimes.
